The removal of soil from the matrix for constructing the mounds also produced drainage canals between the raised fields. The canals, in addition to their primary function of drainage, permit the elimination of harmful gases that limit root growth (Bernard Barthès, personal communication, 1989). This practice considerably reduces the risk of rot for the crops, particularly tubers.
